A True Community Effort

Kevin and Yakita's Story

Kevin and Yakita’s family, including their three children, came to Community of Hope through the Family Promise program. All three students are very involved with school programs, have very positive attitudes, and are eager to participate in CAMP HOPE. Housing instability, however, is an issues that their family has been battling for several years- making it difficult for everyone to feel secure and safe.

They joined us as a part of our transitional program last year. However, not long after, Kevin experienced a significant health crisis and has had two major surgeries in less than 4 months. Yakita was supporting the family on the income of a part time job at a daycare; they got further and further behind on their program fees.

However, they were tenacious and resilient. Kevin is always eager to help with any needed work for Community of Hope and handles lawn maintenance at Riverwalk to help support the family. Yakita finished a nursing course and in now working extra hours to catch up. We have also referred Kevin to Volunteers of America who have helped him file for Social Security Disability benefits related not only to current health concerns but a long and well documented history of disability.

Kevin and Yakita are great models of what families can accomplish when they work hard and make full use of the resources available. Their efforts and our diligence in establishing good cooperative agreements and processes with other providers in the area created an environment that they could thrive.
